Largo Landscaping for Shade, Roots, and Aging Systems
Largo has the most mature tree canopy in Pinellas County — and the most 50-year-old irrigation systems still running on hope. We fix both. Shade-tolerant sod, modern irrigation, and landscapes designed around what is already growing.
When Your Trees Are Older Than Your House
Largo was built in waves — subdivisions in the 1950s, another boom in the 1970s, scattered infill development since. What unites most Largo neighborhoods is this: the trees planted when those homes were built are now 50 to 70 years old, and they have completely changed the growing conditions on every property beneath them.
A live oak that was 8 feet tall in 1968 is now 60 feet wide with a root system that extends well beyond the drip line. The irrigation system installed at the same time is running on schedule timers from the Reagan administration. The original St. Augustine turf is struggling under 80 percent shade that did not exist when it was planted.
This is the Largo landscape problem, and it is not solved by ripping everything out and starting fresh. It is solved by working with the mature canopy — choosing turf and plantings adapted to filtered light, designing irrigation that waters around root competition, and building drainage that routes water past underground root dams. That is what we do here.
Replacing Irrigation That Should Have Died in 1995
We see it every week in Largo: a homeowner calls about a "few broken sprinkler heads" and we find an entire system that has been deteriorating underground for decades. Brittle Schedule 40 PVC from the 1970s. Galvanized swing joints corroded to half their original diameter. Valve solenoids that stick open and flood zones at 3 AM.
Patching these systems is throwing money away. The repair holds for six months, then the next joint downstream fails. We will be honest with you during the estimate: if your system has more than 3 zones with problems, a full replacement usually costs only 25-30 percent more than serial repairs and gives you a system that will run properly for 20+ years.
A complete irrigation replacement for Largo's typical quarter-acre residential lot takes 2 to 4 days. We install modern flex PVC, Hunter or Rain Bird rotors and spray heads, smart controllers with rain sensor integration, and zone layouts designed for your specific property — not the generic grid the original builder stamped onto 200 houses in the same subdivision.
Where We Work Most in Largo
Largo is the largest city in Pinellas County by land area. We have worked in nearly every pocket of it. These are the areas where our trucks show up most often.
Oakhurst and Ridgecrest
1960s-era neighborhoods with some of the heaviest oak canopy in Largo. Nearly every property needs shade-tolerant turf and irrigation rezoning to account for root competition. Small lots, tight access for equipment. We are well practiced at working in these constraints.
Indian Rocks Area
Western Largo near Indian Rocks Beach. Properties here transition between coastal and inland conditions — moderate salt from Intracoastal breezes but more shade than beachfront cities. A hybrid approach works best: salt-aware plant selection combined with shade-tolerant turf varieties.
Belcher Road Corridor
Newer development from the 1990s and 2000s. Less shade, more sun, but often poorly designed original landscaping that relied on annuals and builder-grade shrubs. These properties respond well to a complete front-yard redesign with permanent native plantings and efficient irrigation.
Largo Central Park Area
Mixed residential around the park and recreation complex. Established homes with mature landscaping alongside newer townhome developments. Common requests here: refreshing overgrown beds, replacing leggy hedges, and adding hardscape elements like pavers and retaining walls.
Northwest Largo
Larger lots near the Clearwater border with space for more ambitious projects — full back yard hardscape, paver patios, fire pit areas, and privacy fencing. These properties give us room to design outdoor living spaces, not just plant beds and turf.
Bardmoor / Rosewood
Higher-end subdivisions with HOA standards and larger budgets. Premium plant material, decorative stone borders, professional-grade irrigation controllers, and design that elevates curb appeal beyond the neighborhood standard.
Ridgecrest: Full Renovation Under Four Live Oaks
The homeowner had given up on grass. Four mature live oaks covered roughly 70 percent of the front yard in shade, and the original Floratam St. Augustine had thinned to bare sand over the past decade. Previous landscapers had tried overseeding, fertilizer programs, and even painting the dead patches green.
Our approach: we stripped the remaining turf, regraded for proper drainage away from the foundation, and installed Zoysia Empire in the shaded zones with Palmetto St. Augustine in the two sunny strips that get direct afternoon light. The irrigation system — original 1972 equipment — was replaced entirely with a 5-zone system designed to water around root zones without oversaturating.
We added a curved river rock dry bed along the north property line where water pooled against the fence after rain. Total project took 5 days. The Zoysia established within 4 weeks and has stayed thick through two summer shade seasons since.

Most Largo homes were planted with St. Augustine Floratam, which needs 6+ hours of direct sun. Under a mature live oak canopy, you get maybe 2-3 hours of filtered light. The grass thins, weeds move in, and eventually bare soil takes over. The fix is switching to Zoysia Empire or Palmetto St. Augustine in those zones — both tolerate 60-70 percent shade. We also raise oak canopies by trimming lower branches to allow more indirect light to reach the turf.
If your Largo home was built between 1960 and 1980, the original PVC irrigation lines are past their expected lifespan. Brittle joints crack, old heads spray in random patterns, and galvanized valve bodies corrode shut. We typically recommend full replacement over repair when more than 3 zones have issues — the cost difference is small and you get a modern system with proper coverage, rain sensors, and zone-appropriate scheduling. A full replacement for a typical quarter-acre lot runs 2 to 4 days.
Yes. Largo has some of the most mature tree canopy in Pinellas County, and those large root systems create underground dams that redirect water flow. Surface roots also channel water toward foundations and driveways. We solve this with French drains routed around major root zones, dry creek beds that give water a path to follow, and strategic regrading that directs flow without damaging root systems.
About 15 minutes from our St. Petersburg base via Ulmerton Road or 49th Street. We are in Largo neighborhoods at least 3 days per week and never charge a travel fee. Same-day estimates are often possible depending on our schedule.
A front yard renovation with new sod, refreshed planting beds, and irrigation repair typically runs $3,500 to $6,000 for Largo's average lot size. Full property renovations with back yard, hardscape, and irrigation replacement range from $8,000 to $18,000 depending on scope.
